Becoming a mother can be an extremely transformative experience. However, pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing can produce significant changes in a woman’s body, which cannot be effectively repaired through diet and exercise alone.

For this reason, many women elect to have a mommy makeover to restore their pre-baby figures. Prior to undergoing this surgical procedure, it’s important that patients consider their anesthesia options and preferences.

Continue reading to learn about anesthesia techniques that may be used in conjunction with a mommy makeover and what patients can expect from treatment.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a collection of cosmetic procedures designed to rejuvenate a woman’s body following pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. It often combines an abdominoplasty, breast lift/reduction/augmentation, and liposuction. However, a Brazilian butt lift, cellulite reduction, vaginal rejuvenation, and stretch mark removal may also be performed.

What Is Anesthesia?

Anesthesia is a medication that’s delivered during a medical procedure to eliminate pain. In some cases, it may also produce amnesia and void any memory of the actual surgery.

What Are the Anesthesia Options for a Mommy Makeover?

Because it’s a complex surgical procedure, almost all plastic surgeons perform a mommy makeover under general anesthesia.

General anesthesia is typically administered through an IV and mask. When under general anesthesia, patients are completely unconscious and their respiration is supported by a breathing tube.

This pain management option also ensures that you will not feel any pain during surgery nor remember the procedure itself.

With that being said, it may be possible to undergo individual components of a mommy makeover, such as liposuction, using IV sedation and local anesthesia. These methods also avoid pain during treatment, but patients are awake and breathing on their own.

Finally, women that are unable to unwilling to have any type of anesthesia may wish to consider non-surgical options for a mommy makeover. These can include Botox, dermal fillers, CoolSculpting or other non-invasive fat removal treatments, laser or radiofrequency-based vaginal rejuvenation, and a Sculptra injectable butt lift.
