How does Botox work?
A few tiny drops of Botox are injected with a tiny needle into the muscle that creates a wrinkle. When Botox is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve from communicating with that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes.
As the muscle chills out, the skin on the face above the muscle relaxes and the wrinkles in the skin gradually soften and disappear. Botox treatment does not affect normal facial movement expressions.
Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox Cosmetic) is a protein complex produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, which contains the same toxin that causes food poisoning.
When administered in a medical setting as an injectable form of sterile, purified botulinum toxin, small doses block the release of the Botox called acetylcholine by nerve cells that trigger muscle contraction.
We selectively are interfering with the underlying muscles’ ability to overreact; the existing frown-lines are smoothed out, softened and, in most cases, are nearly invisible in a couple days.
Basically, the Botox blocks the signals that would normally tell your muscles to move. If a specific muscle can’t move, it can’t cause a wrinkle or line.
Botox Wrinkle Treatment Prevention Starts With:
Dr. Singh will administer several tiny injections of Botox Cosmetic directly into the forehead muscles of the areas you wish treated.
The location of the injections will be determined by examining your ability to move certain muscles in the selected area. The location, size, and use of the muscles that create a furrowed brow vary markedly among individuals.
No anesthesia is required, although you may choose to have the area numbed with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. Most patients compare the sensation to a pinch, prick and treatment takes only a couple minutes.
You may resume normal activity almost immediately. You may see a tiny marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows in a couple days. Improvement may continue for as long as several months, and could last up to 4 months*. Every patient has a different aesthetic result because every client’s muscles are different. After Botox is metabolized or absorbed by the body, the muscle action returns. When frown lines reappear, a repeat treatment is necessary to regain the results.
Additional Botox FAQs:
Are there any side effects of Botox Cosmetic?
Side effects of Botox are minimal if any, with very mild discomfort upon injection of the Botox solution. This may be minimized by the use of numbing cream. Bruising at the sight of injection may occur but is not common. One percent of patients develop a slight lowering or ptosis of one eyelid and, also rarely, asymmetry of facial expression. These effects are temporary and may not even be noticed by the patient.
Caution: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued statements warning of the possible hazards of “Botox parties.” Whether used to treat medical conditions such as blepharospasm or strabismus or cosmetic concerns such as furrow lines, a Botox injection is a medical procedure that should be performed in a controlled medical environment by a licensed physician.
The Anatomy of a Wrinkle
As an example we’ll look at the everyday “frown” of the eyebrow or Glabellar lines. The lines that appear between your brows, these glabellar lines, actually result from muscle movement and traditional act of aging.
You may have heard the expression “do you wear your emotions on your sleeve,” but in reality emotions can be read on your face. If you’re angry, stressed or frustrated, for example, you close your brows together, tightly.
The underlying skin hides all of your facial muscles and they contract daily, causing a pleating of the overlying skin, and then, as anyone can see, you’re frowning.
After years of crinkling and wrinkling, those glabellar lines start to stay present longer and can become more visible. For most women, whose faces tend to be more animated than men’s, and whose skin is typically more delicate, these lines may appear exaggerated and can become permanently marked into the skin.
How DO Wrinkle Lines Form?
Wrinkle lines are the dynamic wrinkles between the brows caused by the contraction of corrugator and/or procerus muscles.
Movement of corrugator and procerus muscles can cause the skin between the brows to crease. As skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated contraction of these muscles may create visible lines and wrinkles.
Botox Cosmetic works on the muscles that cause Glabellar Lines
Botox Cosmetic is injected directly into the corrugator and procerus muscles, where it enters the nerve endings to block the release of acetylcholine, the chemical that causes muscles to contract. Once the muscles are at rest, skin becomes smoother.
Results you can see…
In a Botox clinical study results were still visible up to 4 months later
The resulting effect is of both smoother facial features and a youthful “lifting” effect as the Botox allows those muscle functions to become more dominant to create the desired aesthetic result.
Men are becoming HUGE fans of Botox, as well. Erasing and relaxing frown and worry lines give a more confident and assured appearance. And a special added psychological benefit? Seeing yourself “look” less stressed or angry actually triggers more positive emotions.
Botox Combination Treatments
Using Botox to relax the dynamic muscles that cause wrinkles is frequently combined with follow-up dermal fillers. Some lines on the face are a result of skin laxity aging and are not affected by Botox. These lines are readily improved with the use of either Restylane, Juvederm or Belotero (all Safe and Natural Hyaluronic gel fillers). In some situations the Restylane can be injected during the same visit. Other times, such as when treating lip wrinkles, the Restylane or other selected filler will be placed several days later when the muscles have relaxed.
This particular combination treatment can improve the entire facial area.
Can Botox Kill You?
The most interesting thing about Botulinum A Toxin or Botox is that, in its undiluted or natural form, it is a potent poison, that could kill – a neurotoxic protein that is produced by the clostridium botulinum bacterium. If ingested by a human in the raw, Botox can cause a life-threatening type of food poisoning, called botulism.
However, in its commercially FDA Approved refined and purified configuration and form, “Botox,” it is a useful drug that doctors employ as an effective treatment for many different types of health problems.
Approved as a muscle relaxant by the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1989, Botox was originally used to treat facial spasms, eyelid spasms (blepharospasm), the muscle spasms that cause strabismus, or crossed eyes, and cervical dystonia (a neurological movement disorder). BOTOX works by blocking the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that the nervous system sends communication to a muscle, commanding it to move or contract. When a targeted muscle is no longer getting the body’s normal electrical/chemical stimulus to contract, formerly uncontrollable spasms are reduced or eliminated.
Over time, physicians began to administer Botox for several other medical conditions, including:
Chronic migraine headaches
Upper limb spasticity as a result of cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, brain trauma or spinal cord injury
Excessive sweating or Hyperhidrosis
Cosmetic Botox Treatment
Because of its ability to slow down muscles from over reacting, in effect, causing temporary muscle and wrinkle reduction, Botox began to be seen as a highly effective neuromodulator for the aging skin and a way to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe “frown lines” between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).
After producing incredible results in formal, clinical trials, the FDA approved the use of Botox for cosmetic use in 2002. In addition to frown lines, Botox can also help reduce “crow’s feet” and other fine lines on the forehead and around the lips and eyes – lines and wrinkles that tend to accumulate over time as a result of years of smiling, frowning, and squinting.
Today, Botox cosmetic physicians, specifically plastic surgeons, are the primary experts in the Botox field. Results can vary widely based on the medical background, medical designation, and experience of the Botox injector. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were approximately 9.2 million Botox procedures performed in the United States in 2016. The global market for botulinum toxin products is forecast to reach $3.5 billion by 2018.
The Botox Procedure
Botox is a safe and non-surgical procedure that can offer its users a more youthful appearance without surgical intervention or long recovery periods. In fact, a typical procedure usually lasts only a few brief minutes.
The Botox treatment is injected into the forehead, crow’s feet, and muscles one to three times via a very fine needle. Minor side effects are rare, and may include a slight redness or swelling at the injection site(s) which normally diminishes very quickly. Following treatment, visible results of Botox Cosmetic are usually noticed within 3–5 days.
The maximum Botox benefit will be reached within one week or less.
A single treatment lasts about four months. The effect fades slowly and gradually, but since it can be repeated indefinitely with no lasting harm, a patient can return for treatments three or four times a year. However, Botox should not be used during pregnancy, while nursing, or in combination with certain medications.
Before having a Botox procedure, consult with Dr. Singh about any of the following you might have taken recently:
Antibiotics by injection
Allergy or cold medicine
Reasons for Considering a Botox Treatment
Large wrinkles or furrows in your forehead
Small wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes
A vertical “frown line” between your eyebrows
The procedure works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles. A cream with local anesthetic will be placed on your skin prior to treatment, and ice will be immediately applied upon completion of the Botox treatment.
Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) of Botox is injected into the area of the wrinkle. Botox works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them. The result is the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out.
The effects of a Botox treatment will last approximately three to six months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.
Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however following the post-procedure guidelines will dramatically reduce the length and intensity of the recovery period.
Patients should avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections.
It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.
Can Botox Stop Teeth Grinding?
Patients that grind their teeth at night often experience significant jaw pain in the morning. Bruxism, the clinical name for teeth grinding, is often treated with a mouthguard which creates a physical barrier to reduce grinding.
However, many individuals with bruxism find mouthguards only somewhat helpful and note that they can be embarrassing to wear in front of a significant other. Furthermore, mouthguards do not treat the underlying causes of teeth grinding.
Fortunately, a new study published in the journal Neurology has demonstrated that Botox can reduce teeth grinding and jaw clenching by paralyzing the muscles responsible for bruxism.
How Botox Can Reduce Teeth Grinding and Jaw Clenching
The masseter and temporal muscles allow the jaw to move. Botox can be injected into these muscles to stop them from contracting, which restricts teeth grinding.
Promising Findings for Botox as a Treatment for Bruxism
In a recent study of 22 participants with bruxism, 13 individuals received Botox and the rest received a placebo injection.
After a couple of months, participants in the Botox treatment group reported that their teeth grinding was improved or very improved and also noted a reduction in jaw pain.
Two participants that received Botox stated that they experienced a “cosmetic change” in their smiles. It is unknown if the changes were viewed as positive or negative.
Overall, researchers found that Botox “effectively and safely improved sleep bruxism” in this trial.

Imagine only having to come in twice a year to upkeep your Botox injections! At Washingtonian Plastic Surgery, we know that our customers value reliable and high-quality products. That is why we want to introduce you to a new product, DAXI (DaxibotulinumtoxinA for Injection). DAXI is the first new neuromodulator product in nearly 30 years. Just like other neuromodulators on the market, it uses the same primary active ingredient of botulinum toxin type A. This halts the communication between the muscle and nerves, which is beneficial for both medical aesthetic and therapeutic uses. While other botulinum toxins available on the market today last around 3-4 months, DAXI is designed to last up to 6 months. In clinical trials, it has demonstrated high response rates, long duration, and promising safety.
DAXI safely and effectively smooths forehead lines and crows feet that develop from age and sun damage. This product can be used by both men and women to help smooth their wrinkles and fine lines.
So, what makes it different from the others? DAXI combines a highly purified botulinum toxin with a stabilizing peptide that does not contain human or animal-based components. This combination is designed to be longer lasting than other neuromodulators and just as efficient. That is what makes this product “next generation”.
At Washingtonian Plastic Surgery, we are one of the few plastic surgery clinics looking forward to adding DAXI by Injection to our long list of available treatments for you. We are introducing this new and unique neuromodulator product to you with the hopes of establishing premium, long-lasting results that will have you loving the way that you look.
At Washingtonian Plastic Surgery, we want to help you be happy in your own skin. Contact us in McLean, Reston, VA, or Chevy Chase, MD, to schedule an appointment today.
Over the past 20 years, Botox has become synonymous with anti-aging injections.
To the extent that many people believe Botox is a treatment in and of itself, rather than a brand-name neurotoxin. This is similar to the notion that Coke and soda are the same thing.
However, Botox’s reign as the top wrinkle-busting treatment may be coming to an end. A new neurotoxin called Jeuveau is poised to become a worthy Botox competitor.
Here’s why many patients and providers may be making the switch from Botox to Jeuveau Newtox!
WHAT IS JEUVEAU?
Jeuveau is an FDA-approved neurotoxin that has recently entered the aesthetic market. Like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, Jeuveau is composed of botulinum toxin type A and temporarily paralyzes targeted muscles to relax frown lines and wrinkles.
Jeuveau may also have the potential to be used off-label for a number of medical conditions, including chronic migraines, hyperhidrosis, cervical dystonia, and muscle spasms.
IS JEUVEAU THE SAME AS BOTOX?
Jeuveau is the first known 900kDa molecule in the U.S. since Botox, which makes it structurally similar to Botox.
Accordingly, Jeuveau will be administered in the same way as Botox in terms of dosing, storage, and injection technique. Both neurotoxins also have the same longevity and can relax wrinkles for three-to-four months.
For these reasons, Jeuveau and Botox may be used interchangeably for women and men who are seeking correction or prevention of moderate to severe facial lines.
WHY CONSIDER JEUVEAU NEWTOX OVER BOTOX?
One of the key advantages of Jeuveau over Botox is price. With a 20-30 percent price reduction, Jeuveau may be much more appealing than Botox when looking at the sum of units needed.
Additionally, this price reduction could make Jeuveau more accessible to patients, including those who are already receiving anti-aging injections and those who are new to neurotoxins.
Best of all, Jeuveau and Botox have been shown to have similar efficacy and safety profiles. This means that Jeuveau can produce the same great results and longevity as Botox, but at a lower cost.

The purpose of my review is to highly recommend Dr. Singh for plastic surgery. I couldn’t be more pleased with his surgical skill. His office staff was incredibly helpful as well. Dr. Singh was the second surgeon I visited and when I left his office, I knew he was the best surgeon for me. He understood the results I was hoping for and he was honest with me about what I should expect. His demeanor is calm, collected, and confident. His staff is truly phenomenal. I asked them a million questions and to them there wasn’t a question too personal or too mundane. They really helped me be at ease with what I was planning to do and they walked me through every step of the procedure so I knew what to expect from surgery and during the recovery process.

Dr. Singh and his staff are absolutely phenomenal. I am a male diagnosed with Poland’s Syndrome. I chose to have a pec implant surgery, and I could not have been happier with my results. Stunning. At fifty-nine (59), I had contemplated eyelid surgery for years. My upper eyelids grossly sagging & my under-eye puffiness covered an area 2″ x 2″ under the eyes. Dr. Navin Singh’s superior excellence to detail & perfection changed my life! Dr Navin Singh is the Dr’s, the patient’s & the only choice.
Dr Singh and his staff are so professional and is always available to be in contact with, not like most doctor offices around. He was very honest and made me feel very comfortable. I’m three days into my tummy tuck procedure and I will say he explained and went over everything as they would happen. I can’t yet tell my results but it’s a noticeable change. I will definitely recommend and go back for more procedures!
I know the decision to have cosmetic surgery is a big one. It can be costly, and it carries some risk, but it will change your life for the better. I used this site a lot when making my decision and I had consultations with several surgeons. I took a methodical approach, weighed all my options carefully, and I can say with full confidence that if you’re looking for a procedure that Dr. Singh performs, you should go with him, or at least have a consultation. He’s an amazing doctor and just a great person in general. His staff is as kind, patient, thorough, and knowledgeable as he is, and all of that makes a huge difference.
Dr. Singh is AMAZING!!!! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about him and his team. He is so personable and I loved that he and his team made sure that all my questions and concerns were addressed and answered. I started my journey with Dr. Singh in 2010 with a breast augmentation. I did 500cc saline, filled to 550cc. He and his staff were so supportive and helpful before, during, and after surgery. My breasts look so nature and look fantastic!!! I was so happy with my results and Dr. Singh that I went back to him for a tummy tuck with muscle repair in 2012 and now I’m going back for liposuction!
The mini-tummy tuck turned out even better than I expected
Dr. Singh, In two weeks, I didn’t have any bruising, swelling is gone, it looks so natural. I just got engaged and I look so good in my pictures. Thanks so much.
You are a VERY special man. You & Nicolette have changed my life. THANK YOU!! 🙂
