What are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour, create volume, and to revitalize the skin.
They are made up of a hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a natural existing molecule your body that binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in skin.
As your skin ages, hyaluronic acid slowly diminishes forming unwanted hollowness, fine lines, and wrinkles. Dermal fillers work by boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid to revitalize and add volume to the skin. These fillers are soft injectable gel like injections consisting of stabilized, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body.

When will I see Results and How Long will They Last?
The results from this treatment usually last around 4 to 18 months which will vary depending on the area treated and the type of filler used. Following your treatment, over the course of a couple of weeks your results will continue to improve as the product will begin to settle into your skin.
Preparing for Your Filler Treatment
During your consultation, your face will be examined and you will be given recommendations based on your goals and the areas that you are looking to enhance. You will also be asked about your medical history. That would be a good time to inform your physician if you have taken any of the following or if any of the following apply:
- Blood-thinning medications
- Antibiotics orally or by injection
- Muscle Relaxers
- Allergy or Cold medicine
- Sleep medicine
- Allergies
- History of bruising/bleeding
- Skin conditions
- Neurological problems
- Adverse reaction to previously used filler/anesthetic
- Pregnant/ Expecting or planning to become pregnant
- Nursing/Breast Feeding
What to Expect During Treatment
The procedure involves a series of tiny injections with an extremely fine needle, anesthetic included, to go under the skin. The hyaluronic will trigger the production of collagen and elastin in the treated are, immediately rejuvenating your skin. In all, the treatments take about 30 minutes but may vary based on the area(s) being treated.
What to Expect After Treatment
Patients generally return to their normal activities almost immediately after the procedure however, we recommend following our post-treatment guidelines.
- Avoid extensive exposure to the sun
- Skip drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours
- Engaging in heavy physical exercise
- Avoid excessive heat exposure like saunas or tanning
- Laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections
Minor side effects are possible from any treatment and usually resolve on their own without further issue. It is recommended to wait at least 2 weeks to let the treatment take its full effect before scheduling a follow up appointment.
- Localized swelling or bruising at the injection site may occur but is not common
- Rarely, asymmetry of facial expression
- Mild pain
- Headache
Keeping it Up!
Maintenance is key! The effects of dermal fillers will fade over time as they get absorbed by the body. Each person’s body metabolizes or absorbs the hyaluronic acid contained in dermal fillers differently and gradually. The type of filler you receive as well as treatment areas are always factored in when planning your maintenance treatments. We recommend patients follow up anywhere from 3-6 months to maintain their results.
